Fiumicino Airport to Rome City Centre: Train vs Taxi vs Bus (2026 Prices)
Getting from Fiumicino Airport into Rome is easier than in most big cities: there's a direct train, a cheaper regional train, and an official taxi fare that's fixed by the city. The right choice depends on two things more than the ticket price: how many of you are travelling, and where your hotel is.
The short answer
- Travelling alone or as a couple, hotel near Termini: Leonardo Express, €14 each, 32 minutes non-stop.
- Hotel in Trastevere or near Ostiense: FL1 regional train, €8 each.
- Three or four people with luggage, going to the historic centre: official white taxi, €55 fixed for the whole car. It costs about the same as four Leonardo Express tickets and drops you at the door.
- Five or more, a hotel outside the old city walls, or a late arrival: pre-book a private transfer.
- Lowest possible cost: airport bus to Termini, about €7.
Fiumicino to Rome: Every Option Compared
Fiumicino (FCO) sits about 30 km west of the city. All the fares below are per person except the taxi, which is per car.
| Option | Price | Time | Arrives at | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leonardo Express | €14per personOfficial fare | About 32 min, non-stop | Roma Termini only | 1–2 people staying near Termini or on Metro A/B |
| FL1 regional train | €8per personOfficial fare | Around 30–45 min | Trastevere, Ostiense, Tiburtina (not Termini) | Trastevere, Testaccio, Ostiense hotels |
| Official white taxi | €55per car, up to 4 people with luggageFixed by the city | Around 45 min, traffic dependent | Your door, inside the Aurelian Walls | 3–4 people going to the historic centre |
| Airport bus | About €7per person, varies by companyEstimate | 50–70 min, traffic dependent | Roma Termini (some stop at the Vatican area) | Tight budgets, no rush |
| Pre-booked private transfer | Fixed quoteagreed when you bookLive quote | Traffic dependent | Your door, anywhere | 5+ people, children, hotels outside the walls, late flights |
What It Costs for Your Group
This is where most visitors get it wrong. The train looks cheap because the price is per person; the taxi looks expensive because it's per car. Multiply it out (cheapest option highlighted):
| Travellers | FL1 (€8 each) | Leonardo Express (€14 each) | Official taxi (fixed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | €8 | €14 | €55 |
| 2 people | €16 | €28 | €55 |
| 3 people | €24 | €42 | €55 · door to door |
| 4 people | €32 | €56 | €55 · door to door |
The hidden cost of the train is the last mile. If your hotel is a 20-minute walk from Termini, or you'd take a taxi from the station anyway, add that to the train fare. For three people who would need a taxi from Termini anyway, the €55 airport taxi costs about the same as the train plus a short city taxi, with one ride instead of two.
Leonardo Express: Fastest Way to Termini
The Leonardo Express is Trenitalia's non-stop shuttle between Fiumicino and Roma Termini, Rome's main station. It costs €14 per adult and takes about 32 minutes. Trains run several times an hour from early morning until late evening. If you land late at night, check the last departure on Trenitalia for your date before relying on it.
How to take it
- Follow the "Treni / Trains" signs from arrivals. The station is connected to the terminals by a covered walkway.
- Buy your ticket on the Trenitalia app or website, at the self-service machines, or at the ticket office. Check that it says Leonardo Express, from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Termini.
- Validate paper tickets in the machines on the platform before boarding. Digital tickets are usually issued for a specific train or time window; read the conditions on your ticket.
- Get off at the last stop, Roma Termini, where Metro lines A and B and the city buses meet.
Choose it if: you're one or two people, your hotel is near Termini or close to a Metro stop, and you want a fixed journey time without traffic risk.
FL1 Regional Train: Cheapest Train, but Not to Termini
The FL1 is a regional commuter line that costs €8. It's slower than the Leonardo Express because it stops along the way, and it does not go to Termini. Its useful stops for visitors are:
- Roma Trastevere – for hotels in Trastevere, with tram 8 into the centre.
- Roma Ostiense – next to Piramide on Metro B, for Testaccio and Aventino.
- Roma Tiburtina – a large station on Metro B, two stops from Termini.
Check the direction board. FL1 trains from the airport run towards Fara Sabina or Orte. Don't board a Leonardo Express by mistake with an FL1 ticket, or the other way round: the fares are different and inspectors check.
Official Taxi: €55 Fixed to the Historic Centre

Rome sets a fixed fare for licensed taxis between Fiumicino and any address inside the Aurelian Walls, the ancient city walls that enclose the historic centre. That fixed fare is €55, and it covers up to four passengers and their luggage. There's no meter running and no extra for bags.
The area inside the walls includes the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, Monti, the Spanish Steps and Termini, plus most of Trastevere. The Vatican and Prati sit outside the walls, so confirm the price with the driver before you set off if your hotel is there.
How to make sure you pay the fixed fare
- Only use the official taxi rank outside arrivals. Licensed Rome taxis are white and carry the Roma Capitale logo and a licence number on the door.
- Say "tariffa fissa" and your hotel address before the car moves, and confirm the price.
- Ask to pay by card before you get in if you have no cash. Rome taxis are required to accept card payments, but confirming first avoids an argument at the end.
Ignore anyone offering a taxi inside the terminal. Licensed drivers wait at the rank outside. People approaching you in the arrivals hall are not licensed and often charge far more than €55.
Airport Buses: Cheapest, but Slowest
Several private companies run coaches between Fiumicino and Roma Termini, and some also stop near the Vatican. Fares are around €7 per person and vary by company and how far ahead you book. The journey takes 50 to 70 minutes and depends heavily on traffic on the motorway into Rome.
Buses make sense if every euro counts, or for very early or late flights when the timetable suits you better than the train. Buy from the company's own website or its desk in arrivals. At Termini, the buses stop on the side streets of the station, usually Via Marsala or Via Giolitti, so check which one before you meet anyone there.
When a Private Transfer Is Worth It
For most visitors heading into the centre, the official €55 taxi beats a pre-booked transfer: same door-to-door service, no booking needed. A private transfer is worth paying for in a few situations:
- Five or more people: a standard taxi takes four. A minivan keeps the group and luggage together.
- Hotel outside the Aurelian Walls: the fixed taxi fare no longer applies and the meter runs.
- Children: you can request child seats when you book.
- Late-night or very early arrival: a driver waits for you with your name, and the price is agreed in advance.

Five Mistakes to Avoid
- Taking the FL1 to reach Termini. It doesn't stop there. You'll need to change onto Metro B at Tiburtina, or at Ostiense (Piramide station).
- Forgetting to validate a paper ticket. An unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket, and fines on Italian trains are issued on the spot.
- Buying four Leonardo Express tickets for a group of four. At €56, they cost more than the €55 taxi, which also takes you to the door. If price is all that matters, four FL1 tickets (€32) are cheaper than both.
- Accepting a ride from someone in the arrivals hall. Use the official rank only.
- Assuming the fixed fare covers every hotel. It only applies inside the Aurelian Walls. Check your hotel's location first.
