Best eSIM for Turkey (2026): Prices, the eSIM Block and What Still Works
Disclosure: this guide contains affiliate links. If you buy an eSIM through them, WingReserve may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. We also explain Turkey's restrictions on eSIM providers and when a Turkish SIM card makes more sense. How this works
Turkey is one of the few countries where when you buy your eSIM matters as much as which one you buy. Since July 2025, Turkey's telecom regulator, the BTK, has blocked the websites and apps of major international eSIM providers on Turkish networks. If you plan to buy an eSIM after landing in Istanbul, you may find you can't reach the provider's site or top up, and end up queuing at an airport phone shop instead.
The good news: eSIMs themselves aren't banned, and a plan you buy and install before you travel still connects in Turkey. This guide explains exactly what the block means for you, compares Airalo, Saily and Yesim plan by plan, and shows how Turkish tourist SIMs compare on price. It also covers the 120-day phone registration rule that catches out longer-stay visitors.
The short answer
- Buy and install your eSIM before you fly. You probably won't be able to buy or top up from inside Turkey.
- Best for most trips: Airalo. It was the cheapest for most plan sizes in our comparison (for example, 20GB for 30 days at $22.50) and runs on Türk Telekom.
- Buy enough data for the whole trip, because topping up later may not work. A 30-day plan with spare data is the safe choice.
- Staying more than 120 days: read the IMEI section before you rely on a Turkish SIM.
Buy and install at home, on Wi-Fi, before you leave.
The Turkey eSIM Block: What It Means for You
Here's what actually happened, and what it does and doesn't affect:
- What was blocked: in July 2025, the BTK blocked access to the websites and apps of international eSIM providers on Turkish networks. Providers named in reports include Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Nomad and others, and Yesim is also reported on the blocked list.
- What wasn't banned: eSIM technology itself. Your phone's eSIM works normally in Turkey.
- Does a pre-installed eSIM still work? Yes. Saily says a plan bought and activated before you arrive keeps working, because the restriction applies to buying and topping up inside Turkey, not to connecting.
- What you can't rely on in Turkey: buying a new plan, topping up, or using the provider's app and support while you're on a Turkish network.
Turkey eSIM Prices Compared: Airalo vs Saily vs Yesim
Prices are in US dollars for Turkey-only plans. Validity, how long a plan lasts, is shown under each price. The cheapest price in each row is highlighted. Because you can't easily top up in Turkey, pay attention to both data and validity.
| Plan | Airalo (Merhaba) | Saily | Yesim |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB | $4.003 days | $3.997 days | — |
| 5GB | $9.007 days ($10 for 30 days) | $9.9930 days | — |
| 10GB | $15.5030 days | $15.9930 days | — |
| 20GB | $22.5030 days | $22.9930 days | $23.5530 days |
| 50GB | $34.5030 days | — | $40.3730 days |
| Unlimited, 5 days | $18.50 | $18.99 | $18.50 |
| Unlimited, 10 days | $34.50 | $34.99 | $31.74 |
| Unlimited, 15 days | $39.00 | $48.99 | $39.54 for 14 days |
Sources: Airalo unlimited prices and network from airalo.com (16 October 2026); Airalo fixed-data, Saily and Yesim prices from eSIMDB (updated 5 October 2026). "—" means that provider didn't list a Turkey-only plan of that size. Yesim's prices are converted to dollars. Prices change; the checkout page shows the current price.
What "unlimited" means here: Airalo's Turkey unlimited plans give 3GB of full-speed data a day; Saily's give 5GB a day. After that, speed drops sharply until the next day, according to eSIMDB's plan listings. Yesim's are subject to fair use. Because you can't easily top up in Turkey, a large fixed plan such as 20GB or 50GB for 30 days is often the safest buy.
The Best eSIM for Turkey, by Type of Traveller
1Best for most trips: Airalo
- Runs on Türk Telekom
- 20GB / 30 days: $22.50
- 50GB / 30 days: $34.50
Why it stands out: Airalo's Turkey plans (called Merhaba) were the cheapest in our comparison for 5GB, 10GB, 20GB and 50GB, and for the 5-day and 15-day unlimited plans. Its 50GB plan for $34.50 is a good answer to Turkey's top-up problem: buy once, at home, and you're unlikely to run out. Airalo's Turkey page lists Türk Telekom as the network.
2Best for heavy daily use: Saily
- Unlimited: 5GB/day full speed
- All fixed plans 30 days (except 1GB)
Why it stands out: Saily's unlimited plans give 5GB of full-speed data a day, more than Airalo's 3GB, which matters if you stream or work online. Its fixed plans from 3GB to 20GB last 30 days, and its prices are within a few cents of Airalo's for 10GB and 20GB. Saily has also published clear guidance on the Turkey block: install before you go, and don't expect to top up there.
3Best for day-by-day unlimited: Yesim
- Unlimited from 2 to 29 days
- 10 days unlimited: $31.74
Why it stands out: Yesim sells unlimited Turkey plans for almost any number of days, so you can match your exact trip length instead of rounding up. In our comparison, its 10-day unlimited plan was the cheapest of the three.
eSIM vs Turkish Tourist SIM: Which Is Better Value?
Unlike the UK or Saudi Arabia, Turkey's tourist SIMs are not much cheaper than a travel eSIM. Visitors can only buy a tourist line, registered to their passport. Traveltomtom's August 2026 price check found:
| Network | Price | Data | Calls / SMS | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Türk Telekom | 1,000 TL | 25GB | 750 min / 750 SMS | 28 days |
| Turkcell | 1,300 TL | 20GB | 200 min + WhatsApp | 1 month |
| Vodafone | 1,500 TL | 20GB | 750 min / 250 SMS | 28 days |
| Vodafone | 1,850 TL | 50GB | 750 min / 250 SMS | 28 days |
Source: Traveltomtom, "Best Prepaid SIM Card in Turkey" (August 2026), which used a rate of about 47 TL to the dollar. Airport prices are usually higher than in city stores. Prices change often with the lira.
At that exchange rate, the cheapest tourist SIM, Türk Telekom's 25GB for 1,000 TL, works out at a little over $21, against $22.50 for Airalo's 20GB eSIM. Turkcell and Vodafone cost more than the eSIM for similar data. The tourist SIMs do include call minutes, but you pay for them with a passport registration at a store, usually after a long flight.
Our rule of thumb for Turkey
- Most trips: a travel eSIM bought at home. Similar price, online on landing, no paperwork.
- You need lots of local calls: a Turkish tourist SIM includes minutes.
- You forgot to buy an eSIM: a tourist SIM from a city store rather than the airport, if you can manage until then.
The 120-Day IMEI Rule: Who Needs to Worry
Turkey requires phones bought abroad to be registered if they're used on Turkish networks for more than 120 days. After that, an unregistered phone is blocked from mobile networks, though Wi-Fi still works.
- Holiday of a few weeks: not relevant to you.
- Turkish SIM for a long stay: registration is done in person, at a PTT post office or similar, with your passport, and there's a government fee of several thousand lira that changes with inflation. Check the current amount before you go.
- Travel eSIM for a long stay: travel eSIMs connect as roaming, and reports suggest they usually don't trigger the block, but this isn't officially confirmed. Saily notes some users staying 120 days or more have reported connection problems.
How Much Data Do You Need in Turkey?
Because topping up from inside Turkey is unreliable, it's worth buying a little more than you think you need:
| How you use your phone | 1 week | 2 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Light: maps, WhatsApp, ride-hailing, bookings | 5GB | 10GB |
| Average: plus social media, photo uploads, some video calls | 10GB | 20GB |
| Heavy: streaming, hotspot, daily video calls | 20GB or unlimited | 50GB |
Planning ranges, not measurements, rounded up because of the top-up restriction in Turkey.
How to Set Up Your Turkey eSIM (Do It Before You Leave)
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. A locked phone won't work with a travel eSIM or a Turkish SIM.
- Buy enough data for the whole trip, at home, and install it over Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly.
- Save the QR code and activation details offline, as a screenshot or printout, in case you need to reinstall.
- Test it if you can. Some plans can be connected before departure; others start on arrival. Check your plan's activation rule.
- When you land: set mobile data to the eSIM and switch on data roaming for that line. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming.
- Turn off data roaming on your home line, but keep the line on for bank codes by SMS.
Plan the rest of the trip: compare airport transfers from Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen, and check travel insurance before you go. Combining Turkey with Europe? Our Airalo vs Saily vs Yesim comparison covers multi-country plans.
Our verdict
A travel eSIM is still the easiest way to stay connected in Turkey, as long as you buy and install it before you leave home. Airalo is the best value for most trips, with 20GB for 30 days at $22.50 and a 50GB plan that removes any worry about topping up. Saily is better if you'll use a lot of data every day, and Yesim lets you match an unlimited plan to the exact length of your trip.
