The UK is one of the few countries where local options are often cheaper than travel eSIMs, and we show you those too, even though we earn nothing from them. How this works

Arrive at Heathrow and you'll need data before you've even found the Tube: to check which train to take, to pay contactless fares and track your route, and to message your hotel. The good news is that staying connected in the UK is easy and, compared with most countries, cheap. The catch is that there are more options than anywhere else in Europe, and the best one depends on how long you're staying and how much data you use.

This guide compares the three travel eSIMs most visitors look at (Airalo, Saily and Yesim) plan by plan. It then shows the two UK options eSIM sellers rarely mention: EE's own visitor eSIM and the British pay-as-you-go SIMs sold in every supermarket. By the end you'll know exactly which one to buy for your trip.

The short answer

  • Want a small plan sorted before you fly: Yesim. It was the cheapest for 1GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB, and every plan lasts 30 days.
  • Need a UK phone number for calls and texts: Airalo's Uki Mobile+ plans include a +44 number.
  • Want truly unlimited data: EE's visitor eSIM, at £15 for 7 days with no daily cap. See below.
  • UK plus mainland Europe on one trip: a Europe & UK plan. Prices below.

UK eSIM Prices Compared: Airalo vs Saily vs Yesim

Prices are in US dollars for UK-only plans. Validity is shown under each price, because a cheap plan that expires after 3 days is no bargain on a week in London. The cheapest price in each row is highlighted.

Sources: Airalo unlimited prices from airalo.com (16 October 2026); Airalo fixed-data, Saily and Yesim prices from eSIMDB (updated 4 October 2026). Yesim's prices are converted to dollars, so the exact amount depends on your currency. Prices change often; the checkout page always shows the current price.

What "unlimited" means here: after the daily full-speed allowance (3GB a day on Airalo's UK plans, 5GB on Saily's), speed drops to about 1 Mbps until the next day, according to eSIMDB's plan listings. That's fine for maps and messages, slow for video. If you really need unlimited, EE's visitor eSIM below has no daily cap.

The Best eSIM for the UK, by Type of Traveller

1Best value: Yesim

  • 10GB / 30 days: about $18
  • Every fixed plan lasts 30 days
  • Europe & UK at the same price

Why it stands out: in our comparison Yesim was the cheapest for every fixed-data size and for most unlimited plans. Its fixed plans all last 30 days, so you won't lose data because a plan expired before your trip ended. Its Europe & UK plans cost the same as UK-only ones for 1GB to 20GB, which makes it the easy choice if you're also visiting Paris or Amsterdam.

Watch out for: prices are set in another currency and converted, so they won't be round numbers at checkout. Data only, no UK number.

2Best if you need a UK number: Airalo

  • Runs on EE
  • Uki Mobile+ includes a +44 number
  • Unlimited 7 days: $27

Why it stands out: Airalo's UK eSIM runs on EE, according to its UK page. Its Uki Mobile+ plans add a UK +44 number with calls and texts, from $5 for 1GB over 3 days, or $14 for 5GB over 7 days. That's useful if you need to receive a text from a UK bank or a restaurant booking, or call a taxi firm. It also had the cheapest 7-day unlimited plan of the three.

Watch out for: the standard Uki Mobile plans are data-only, so choose a "+" plan if you need a number. Several of the cheapest plans last only 3 or 7 days. The unlimited plans slow down after 3GB a day.
Check Airalo UK plans →

3Best for heavier daily use: Saily

  • Unlimited: 5GB/day full speed
  • Fixed plans up to 20GB

Why it stands out: Saily's UK unlimited plans give 5GB of full-speed data a day before slowing, more than Airalo's 3GB, for nearly the same price. If you'll use a lot of data on some days, that headroom matters. London Travel Geek also reports that Saily allows hotspot use and gives you 180 days to activate the plan.

Watch out for: it wasn't the cheapest in any row of our comparison, and its 1GB plan costs more than Airalo's or Yesim's.

The Cheaper Local Options Most eSIM Guides Skip

Prepaid mobile data in the UK is cheap, and visitors can use it too. There are two ways.

EE Travel eSIM: truly unlimited, from the UK's own network

EE, one of the UK's main networks, sells a data-only eSIM made for visitors. You buy it online before you travel, and you have 90 days to start using it. Unlike the travel eSIMs above, the data is unlimited with no speed cap:

EE pass1 day3 days7 days14 days30 days
Price£5£10£15£20£30
DataUnlimited, uncapped speed

The trade-offs: it's data-only (no number and, on Android, no SMS), your phone must be unlocked, and all plans block 18-rated content, a setting you can't change. For most visitors who want unlimited data, those don't matter, and it beats every unlimited travel eSIM in our table on price.

A UK pay-as-you-go SIM: the most data for the money

British prepaid SIMs aren't registered, so you don't normally need ID to buy one. Starter SIMs are sold in supermarkets, newsagents and phone shops. Examples from London Travel Geek's September 2026 price check:

  • Three: £10 for 40GB for a month, with a UK number. Also available as an eSIM.
  • Lebara (Vodafone network): £5 for 5GB, or £10 for 30GB, for 30 days.
  • EE pay-as-you-go: £10 for 20GB for 30 days.

The trade-offs: you need to find a shop after you land; airport shops charge more, according to the same guide. Some networks' online payments reject foreign cards, and a physical SIM replaces your home SIM unless your phone has two slots.

Our rule of thumb for the UK

  • Short trip, light use, want it sorted before you fly: a small travel eSIM. Yesim 5GB or 10GB is plenty for a week of maps and messages.
  • Want unlimited data: EE's Travel eSIM.
  • Staying a month or more: a UK pay-as-you-go SIM or eSIM gives a UK number and the most data.
  • Visiting the UK and mainland Europe: one Europe & UK travel eSIM.

How Much Data Do You Need in the UK?

Less than you'd think. Hotels, cafés and many attractions have free Wi-Fi, and what really uses mobile data is video, not maps or messages.

How you use your phone1 week2 weeks
Light: maps, WhatsApp, journey planning, bookings3–5GB5–10GB
Average: plus social media, photo uploads, some video calls5–10GB10–20GB
Heavy: streaming, hotspot for a laptopUnlimitedUnlimited

Planning ranges, not measurements. All three travel eSIM providers let you top up in the app if you run low.

Visiting the UK and Mainland Europe? Get a Europe & UK Plan

The UK isn't in the EU, so an EU-only plan won't work there, and if your phone plan is from an EU country, EU roaming rules don't cover you in the UK either. If your trip combines London with Paris, Amsterdam or Rome, one regional plan that includes the UK is simplest. For 10GB over 30 days, the prices we found were:

  • Yesim Europe & UK: $17.92, the same price as its UK-only plan.
  • Airalo EUconnect: $24. Airalo's Eurolink, which covers more countries, is $31.
  • Saily Europe: $35.99.

Before buying, open the plan's country list and check every country on your route. Heading to Italy too? See our best eSIM for Italy guide.

How to Set Up Your UK eSIM Before You Fly

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. EE's compatibility guide says iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later models are compatible (except iPhones made for mainland China). On Android, dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM.
  2. Buy and install at home, on Wi-Fi. Installing needs internet, so don't leave it until you land. Check your plan's activation rule; most only start counting days when they first connect in the UK.
  3. Label your lines "Home" and "UK" so you know which is which.
  4. When you land: set mobile data to the UK eSIM and switch on data roaming for that line. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming, so they won't work without it.
  5. Turn off data roaming on your home line, but keep the line on so you still receive bank codes by SMS.

Landing at Heathrow or Gatwick? Our London trip planner covers getting in from the airport, hotels and attractions, with real costs. You can also compare pre-booked airport transfers.

Five Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying a SIM at the airport. Airport shops and vending machines tend to charge more than supermarkets and network shops.
  • Paying for "unlimited" travel eSIM data you can't use at full speed. If you need unlimited, EE's visitor eSIM has no daily cap.
  • Choosing a 3- or 7-day plan for a longer trip. Check validity before data.
  • Assuming EU roaming covers you. The UK isn't in the EU; check your own plan's UK rules before you rely on it.
  • Leaving data roaming on for your home line. Background app updates can cost more than the whole eSIM.

Our verdict

For most short trips, buy a small travel eSIM before you fly: Yesim is the best value, and Airalo's Uki Mobile+ is the one to choose if you need a UK number. If you want unlimited data, EE's visitor eSIM is cheaper than any unlimited travel eSIM we compared. For long stays, a UK pay-as-you-go SIM gives you the most data for the money.

UK eSIM: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best eSIM for the UK?

For most visitors, Yesim, because it was the cheapest for fixed-data plans from 1GB to 20GB and its plans last 30 days. Choose Airalo's Uki Mobile+ if you need a UK phone number, and EE's Travel eSIM if you want unlimited data with no daily cap.

How much does an eSIM for the UK cost?

In October 2026, UK travel eSIMs started at about $3 to $4.50 for 1GB, and 10GB cost about $18 to $19. Unlimited travel eSIMs cost about $27 to $29 for 7 days, while EE's own visitor eSIM was £15 for 7 days of unlimited data.

Is a UK SIM card cheaper than an eSIM?

Often, yes. UK pay-as-you-go SIMs such as Three (£10 for 40GB) or Lebara (£10 for 30GB) give more data for the money and include a UK number. The trade-off is that you need to buy one after you arrive, while a travel eSIM works the moment you land.

Do I need ID to buy a SIM card in the UK?

Usually not. UK pay-as-you-go SIMs aren't registered, so you can buy one in a supermarket or newsagent without ID. Some networks ask for proof of age to remove adult content filters.

Does EU roaming work in the UK?

Not automatically. The UK isn't in the EU, so EU roaming rules don't apply there. Some EU operators still include the UK in their plans, so check yours, or buy a Europe & UK eSIM.

Which network does Airalo use in the UK?

EE, according to Airalo's UK eSIM page. Other providers use different UK networks and show them on their plan pages.

Can I get a UK phone number with an eSIM?

Yes, with some plans. Airalo's Uki Mobile+ plans include a +44 number for calls and texts, and UK networks such as Three sell pay-as-you-go eSIMs with a number. Most travel eSIMs, including EE's visitor eSIM, are data-only.
